Taylor Swift posted to her more than 283 million followers on Instagram, “I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and issues that I think need a warrior. I think she is a steady and talented leader and I believe we can accomplish so much in this country if we are led by peace and stability, not chaos.”
Swift also said she was “impressed” by Harris’ choice of Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. She praised Walz for his decades of work for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights.
Swift continued: “I’ve done my research and I’ve made a decision. Do your own research, it’s your decision. I especially want to tell first-time voters: remember you have to register to vote! And I think it’s easier to vote early. I’m linking to information about registration and early voting in my story.”
In her post, signed ‘Childless Cat Lady,’ 34-year-old Swift slammed Trump’s fellow candidate Sen. J. D. Vance over his comment about childless women. Swift also posted a picture of her cat, Benjamin Button who was depicted on the cover of the Time magazine.
The endorsement came as a shock to Harris’s campaign, two senior campaign officials said to NBC News. One of them disclosed how the endorsement is a clear indication that the vice president has a winning campaign and that she can draw massive support from other quarters.
This endorsement was expected as Swift supported Joe Biden and Harris in the 2020 presidential election. Swift allowed her song “Only the Young” to be used in a 2020 campaign ad.
Swift once avoided speaking out on American politics, but she became more vocal after her 2020 documentary “Miss Americana” showed her struggle to criticize Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn. She supported Blackburn’s opponent, Phil Bredesen, though Blackburn ultimately won the election.
A recent national NBC News poll found that 40% of registered voters had a positive opinion of Swift, while 16% had a negative one. 53% of Democrats viewed her positively, while 28% of Republicans said the same. In her Instagram post, Swift also criticized social media users who circulated false images created by artificial intelligence showing that she supported the Trump-Vance ticket. Trump shared those images on his platform, Truth Social.
Swift said, “I recently learned that AI had created false images in my name showing that I supported Donald Trump’s presidency. This further deepened my fears of AI and made me aware of the dangers of spreading misinformation. It led me to conclude that I must be completely transparent about my true voting intentions. The easiest way to combat misinformation is to be honest.”
Swifties for Kamala, a fan group of Swift, welcomed the news.
When asked about Swift’s endorsement of Trump, she said, “I have no idea.”
