Babe Ruth’s ‘Called Shot’ Jersey Breaks Record: The famous baseball player Babe Ruth’s shirt that he wore when he “called the shot” and hit a home run in game 3 of the 1932 World Series set a new record by selling for US$24.1 million (£18.1 million). Now that it’s been sold, the shirt is the most valuable sports collectible ever.

The star player for the New York Yankees who died owned this shirt, which was last auctioned off in 2005 and fetched $940,000. At the time, though, the item was only connected to the 1932 World Series and not to the famous play where Ruth pointed his bat to the fans in the outfield before hitting a home run into center field off of Charlie Root, the Chicago Cubs pitcher.

When it was reported in May that the Ruth jersey would be auctioned off, Chris Ivy, who is in charge of sports auctions at Heritage, said he thought it could fetch as much as $30 million.
